This diary page actually encompases the whole weekend.. which wasn't really a weekend since I was working..still

as is so often the case we begin with a pet.. the cats just love shoeboxes!!

still trying for some perspex control knobs for Charlies bass.. here I rasp a tube..

and then begin shaping the two knobs

next up is this Elm Robert Fripp Slimline.. one of the pickups was faulty and to find the problem I had to remove everything!!!!

problem sorted and strings back on..

the re-wiring half way through.. basically at this stage we have a playable guitar with sustainer and standard pickups

next up the GK3 kit is wired in..

and we end up with a very very full cavity.. space is a problem with the slimlines

the control knobs are put in place and we have a guitar...

with hundreds of emails in the background she is set up

and then it is on to the final stage.. a chunk of ebony

is cut out and etched with the 'Crimson Guitars' and the serial number

and she is ready to go!!

the choice of locally grown English Elm worked out particularly well

and for some reason on this one the controls don't seem to look quite so daunting!!

and of course she has the 'belly-carve' so is a very very comfortable guitar to carress!!

back to the knobs..

and here is where I end the process... the next attempt at this will be making a mould and casting them out of resin.. that way I'm guaranteed an even result..

Charlie's Bass is then set up again.. selective stoning of the frets is required.. these necks don't respond in quite the same way as timber ones and need a lot more work to get playing properly..

anyway, in the end she is deemed ready and Charlie comes and picks her up in time for the start of Goldfrapps next glut or rehearsals and touring!

we cannot wait to see her under full stage lighting

the pearlescent glitter cast in the acrylic just comes alive in the light!

the next version of this will be a timber necked model to see the variation in sound.. should be fun!
All my best,
Ben
