Thursday 21st June 'o7

A day of dust and demons... well, ok, just a dammned lot of dust!

1

we begin with a raw blank of timber weighing in at what feels like about 15 lbs.. purpleheart and Beli will combine to make a guitar craft acoustic..

2

 after 45 minutes of carving..

3

 1 and a half hours...

4

got bored so spent some time with the bobbin sander cleaning up a few edges

5

lost count of time.. but I'm starting to see the end result

6

and here it is.. the overall shape is pretty much spot on.. next move with this guitar is to hollow her out.. now that will take some time!

7

but it will be very impressive nonetheless

8

on to the Extended Range Bass, the headstock design is transfered onto the guitar

9

the cap is carved to accentuate the drop-top curve.. and the forarm contour is also carved.. the contrast between the maple and the cedar is one of my favourite design features

10

a raw blank prior to carving..

11

after thinning the headstock down the tuning head positioning holes are marked out and

12

the central weight-saving cavity is cut out

13

 and rasped to shape

14

in playing position... this shape is surprisingly ergonomic.. or not really that surprising since that was why it was designed..?..

15

several hours later and most of the carving has been performed... the width of this neck is due to the combination tapping/standard guitar playing and is specifically for Ric with his prefered wide spacing... redefining custom hey?

16

there will be more work on the back once the pickups have been built.. they will be recessed from behind so that the front will remain unblemished.. Wizard are currently developing several very cool pickups for us, some humbuckers that fit in what looks like the end of a bullet and are used for single strings.. and a pickup design using super strong magnets that can pick up the string through the top of the guitar.. fun fun fun!

17

this is the best bit.,..  really comfortable carve

18

and the neck if it wasn't so wide this would be a super-slim... but I think I'll call it 'wide wide fat'

19

an almost guitar.. .

20

tomorrow I'll do my lungs a furthur dis-service by completely sanding both the acoustic and this ERB down.. I may even get some stain on the front of the ERB.. I can't wait to see strings on these babys!

All my best,

Ben
